Home about us

The Nature Conservation Foundation (www.conservation.in) is engaged in promoting science-based and socially responsible wildlife conservation in India.  NCF has research and conservation programs in diverse habitats ranging from coral reefs to tropical rainforests in south and north-east India, and the high Himalaya.

One of NCF’s focal areas in the Eastern Himalaya program has been a research and conservation project in and around Namdapha National Park in Arunachal Pradesh, north-east India (being implemented since 2003), with some of the communities living in and around the park. NCF’s program in Namdapha includes wildlife monitoring, exploring livelihood options for the Lisu, community health and education, conservation awareness and outreach, survey and exploration work (see http://ncf-india.org/viewprojects.php?class=ecosystem&type=eastern+himalaya). Limited wildlife or adventure tourism managed entirely by local communities is one of the most promising options in ensuring that local people benefit from the park, and support the existence of the park and its wildlife. This website provides a one-stop accurate and detailed information database on the park and all its aspects for travellers, interested naturalists and citizens. We hope this can be a catalyst for limited well-planned community-based tourism in the area. The content for the website has been conceptualised, compiled and written by Umesh Srinivasan and Aparajita Datta. Nipi Software, Mysore have designed and administered the site. The project has been supported by the Rufford Small Grants Foundation, UK and the Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund, USA.

Karthik Teegalapalli, Nandini Velho and Rohit Naniwadekar have contributed to write-ups for other Protected Areas in Arunachal Pradesh. Most of the maps have been prepared by R. Raghunath, GIS analyst, NCF.

Several colleagues/friends at NCF who have been associated with our program at Namdapha and other places in Arunachal have contributed their photographs for the website. We also thank several others for generously sharing their photographs for this website.

Currently our image gallery has 489 images under six main groups. Although many are not of a high quality, they nevertheless allow people to know of and view many more species. Some groups are currently depauperate and we hope to remedy this soon; we would also welcome any photographic contributions (photo credits would be given) for this website. We also welcome any corrections to errors in identification and assistance with identification of some images. Most images in the gallery are taken in Namdapha itself, while a few are from other areas in Arunachal (but also known to occur in Namdapha).

We have done our best to keep the information up-to-date and accurate and re-checked secondary sources for accuracy. The views expressed in the website are that of the main authors and do not necessarily reflect any official positions of the Nature Conservation Foundation.
